The Red Dot Revolution by SIG SAUER [REPOST]

No one can deny that the MRDS or micro red dot sight has become a force multiplier in the world of pistols in the recent years. With both original manufacturers and aftermarket vendors such as yours truly making slides compatible with optics, the Golden Age of red dots is upon us. Having personally been to SIG Academy and taken their Pistol Mounted Optics Handgun Course, there are numerous advantages to having an optic in addition to a faster target acquisition.

For instance, if you the shooter are less-than perfect in your stance, presentation or trigger press, the dot will deviate. Its that real time feedback that provides the user to self-train and get better on the range or even during dry fire practice sessions.

Pull up a chair and read SIG's recent post about how pistol sights have evolved through history to what they've become today.

From SIG SAUER: Iron sights vs. the Red Dot. The revolution has begun and the pistol mounted optic is quickly taking over as the preferred sighting system for armed professionals, competitors and enthusiasts alike. Watch as members throughout SIG SAUER's different divisions take you through some of the history, development, and implementation of the pistol red dot from product to training at the SIG SAUER Academy.

Designed for fast, responsive target acquisition and accuracy, open reflex red dot sights, or pistol-mounted optics, are quickly becoming popular among experienced and novice shooters. We sat down with SIG SAUER Academy Director Scott Reidy to discuss the advantages of red dot sights and how the Academy is putting them to good use.

At age 35, eyesight begins to deteriorate which can lead to what is known as the aged-eye shooter. But with a red dot, you are able to resurrect your shooting career, giving you the opportunity to see your sights and be target-focused. Reidy, who has spent the past 30 years of his career in law enforcement and who has also served 4 years active duty with the United States Marine Corps, says that’s why police agencies like red dots. “They allow police officers to focus on the threat, make a good use-of-force decision and then superimpose the red dot on the threat.” Competitive shooters and anyone looking for a self defense gun can also reap similar benefits. “In low-light engagements, it allows you to see and to make good, solid hits.”
